Google Extensions

Google Extensions differ from Apps. They are resources available to Google Chrome users that allow you enhanced functionality that is typically not available on other browsers. This includes features such as an online timer, text-to-speech tools, URL shorteners, ad blockers, citation generators, and more. They are small programs that you access on your Chrome Browser menu bar that can save you time and enhance productivity. Students can also add extensions to their Chromebooks if that is allowed in your district. You access available extensions the same way you access apps--via the Chrome Web store.

Steps:

  1. Below are some recommended extensions for either your Chromebook or your Chrome Browser. These can be located in the Chrome Web Store. Search the Store or search by Category to find ones that interest you.

Note: Remember to locate some apps you will consider using, either for yourself or your students. In your assignment you will be asked to identify several and reflect on how you used them or will use them.

  2. While having extensions on your Chrome Browser or on your Chromebook can add functionality to your workflow, there are so many good extensions that it can be easy to collect many of them. This can lead to an overabundance of them on your menu bar that can make it difficult to locate and use them effectively. There is an extension for that!
  3. Add the extension known as Extension Manager. This handy extension lists all of your extensions as a pop out window when you click on it. There are several Extension Managers in the Chrome Web store.
  4. Go to the Chrome Web Store and do a search for Extension Manager.
